Happening right now at Disneyland is the New Orleans-style celebration, "New Orleans Bayou Bash!" You can join in the fun In New Orleans Square on weekends and holidays, February 10 through March 11. Jazz musicians perform throughout New Orleans Square and Princess Tiana and her friends from "The Princess and the Frog" lead guests in hand-clapping, dancing-in-the-streets fun. New Orleans Square is decorated in purple, green and gold for the celebration, and specially-themed food and merchandise items are available. Dates for "New Orleans Bayou Bash!" are Feb. 10-12, 17-21 (Presidents' Day weekend), and 24-26, March 2-4 and 9-11 from 10 AM - 5 PM. (Photo by Disney)

Disneyland Resort gets Earl of Sandwich

My favorite food discovery in the Walt Disney World Resort was the restaurant Earl of Sandwich. I'm always on the lookout for healthy, but tasty food at a great price and Earl of Sandwich lived up to all of that! That's why I'm excited that the Earl is coming to Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort. Here's the official info:

Disneyland Resort today announced that Earl of Sandwich will open a new location at Downtown Disney in early summer 2012. The restaurant will offer guests a unique, casual-quick dining option while visiting Downtown Disney.

“We pride ourselves in giving our guests a unique experience at Downtown Disney through different retail and food offerings,” said Tony Bruno, vice president of Resort Hotels and Downtown Disney. “This will be the only Earl of Sandwich in California and it is sure to be a favorite among our guests as it has been at Walt Disney World for nearly eight years.”

The new restaurant, which continues to have historical ties to the inventor of the sandwich, the Sandwich family, will be adjacent to AMC Theatres. Signature hot sandwiches will be available including The Original 1762, a sandwich of freshly roasted beef, sharp cheddar and creamy horseradish sauce all on freshly baked artisan bread. Soups, salads, wraps and desserts also are on the menu. Earl of Sandwich offers a vast array of hot and cold beverages including The Earl’s Grey Lemonade. Breakfast sandwiches and pastries will be available in the morning and a variety of catering options will be offered at this location.

“We are looking forward to the grand opening of our newest location at the Disneyland Resort,” stated Robert Earl, chairman of Earl of Sandwich. “The success we’ve experienced at Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris and our other 15 locations has proven that the quality of our food and our dining experience will bring guests back time and time again.”

Little Mermaid attraction pays homage to its author

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?

If you look carefully while riding through The Little Mermaid attraction at Disney California Adventure, you'll find this hidden artwork, featuring a silhouette of the story's original author, Hans Christian Andersen, and a traditional version of the mermaid.

Both are reminiscent of statues in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Andersen lived most of his life.

Lunar New Year celebrated at Disneyland (1/20 - 1/29)

The Lunar New Year, which begins at a different time each year according to the movements of the sun and moon, usually beginning in late January and is being celebrated at Disneyland park from Jan. 20-29. There will live performances, such as a Chinese Dragon dance troupe, lion dancers, ribbon wand dancers, Korean drummers, Vietnamese musicians and dancers, and martial artists. Mulan and Mushu will be on hand for photos, and Chip 'n' Dale are dressed up for the occasion. Special food carts include offerings such as chocolate churros, eggrolls, edamame and almond cookies.

That's when Space Mountain and California Screamin' had new soundtracks featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers. Disneyland's "Fun with Music" show

These 1976 images are from the "Fun With Music" show in the Fantasyland Theatre in Disneyland. In those days, the Fantasyland Theatre was an indoor venue, located around where Pinocchio's Daring Journey/Village Haus is today.

Students would visit Disneyland on a school field trip, and after experiencing attractions such as "it's a small world" and "Country Bear Jamboree," they would be treated to this entertaining show, which taught all about music. That's Jim Adams as Father Music and on the piano is Disneyland's own senior music director/producer, and my next featured interviewee, Bruce Healey. The guy with the big ears is Mickey Mouse. New on Main Street U.S.A. in 2012, Jolly Holiday Bakery Café offers a menu of sandwiches, salads, bakery items and specialty beverages. The “Mary Poppins” themed café has whimsical touches from the film throughout the building and outdoor seating area, including this stained-glass image on an entry window. The menu at Jolly Holiday Bakery Café includes an Angus roast beef salad with blue cheese; a Caprese sandwich with tomatoes, Buffalo mozzarella, basil, butter lettuce and garlic aioli on toasted focaccia bread; and a selection of soups. Interview with the creator of "The Twilight Zone" logo

"The Twilight Zone" logo, pictured here on a sundial near the "Tower of Terror" at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, has become legendary. Of course, it had a life of its own during the run of the classic Rod Serling television series that the Disney park attractions are based on. But when Joe Messerli originally created this famous logo, he had no connections with Disney at all. Years later, he was involved in a number of Disney comic books and activity books including "TaleSpin" and "Darkwing Duck."

Sadly, Joe passed away in 2009, and I present for, for the first time anywhere, the last interview of Joe Messerli.

The Rocketeer - now on Blu-ray

"The Rocketeer" has finally flown onto Blu-ray!

Taking place in the 1930s, this film is really timeless. The attention to the detail of that time period is excellent, and I personally love hearing that music. Seeing this again for the first time since its original 1991 release, I once again was delighted. And both my six year old and my nine year old enjoyed the film. There's quite a bit of violence, even killing, but my kids enjoyed a story about a guy who gets a machine that helps him to fly.

The story is that test pilot Cliff Secord discovers a top-secret jetpack, which hurls him into the middle of a great adventure. He encounters an assortment of ruthless villains, led by an Errol Flynn-esque Hollywood screen star.

With the help of his actress girlfriend, the young pilot battles enormous odds to defeat his foes who are anxious to use the device in an evil plan to rule the world.

What about BONUS FEATURES? Well, other than the original trailer, there are none. With the cult popularity of this classic, that surprised me.

Nevertheless, "The Rocketeer" looks fantastic in its restored state on Blu-ray in high def, and still holds up after twenty years, proving it was no fly-by-night film

I want to take a moment to thank all of you who follow me here or Facebook, Twitter, or thru my emails. I really love doing Mouse Clubhouse for you and I can't tell you how much it means to me that so many of you enjoy it.

Disney is special to me. Without Disney, I might never have met my wife when she was working on Main Street at Disneyland. After all, we didn't even live in near cities. And my boys know they may not have ever been born were it not for Disney.

I've met some of the most incredible people and made lifelong friends as a result of Disney.

I appreciate your interest in what I do!

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or something else, I wish you the best at this holiday season and a very happy and healthy New Year!

Here's some photos I took at Disneyland in 1993. Before it's a small world holiday was around, the Country Bear Jamboree Christmas was the attraction that was sure to put Guests into the holiday spirit!

Oscar returned in this version of the show, sitting near the Bear Band for the holiday festivities.

Bunny, Bubbles and Beulah sang "Sleigh Ride!" Jing-a-ling-a-ling!

In Disneyland and Walt Disney World, Big Al sang, "Another New Year."
In Japan, however, he sang in English to the tune of Auld Lang Syne,
"The time has come to celebrate, and ring in the New Year.
But my wife took off with my hound dog and she left me sittin' here.

Disney Fantasy will present "Wishes"

Disneyland at sea?! Yup, in "Wishes," Disney Cruise Line's newest original stage show, presented exclusively aboard the Disney Fantasy. The stage spectacular, performed in the Walt Disney Theatre, combines an enchanting score, lavish production numbers and a heartfelt story about three best friends who discover the secret to being a grown-up is staying connected to their inner child. The story begins as long-time best friends Kayla, Nicole and Brandon visit Disneyland to celebrate their high school graduation, shown in this concept art.

Full-scale production numbers and special effects bring excitement to the stage as the cast of "Wishes" performs original songs and classic Disney tunes with a contemporary twist, including "I've Got No Strings" from "Pinocchio," as shown in the concept art below.

Have no worries, "The Lion King" will be represented in "Wishes," as shown in the concept art below for the "Hakuna Matata" number.

"Mulan" will also be represented in "Wishes," with the song "Reflections," shown in the concept art below. One of my favorite parts of sailing on the Disney Dream was the incredible stage productions, and my wish is to see "Wishes" on the upcoming Disney Fantasy!

Here's another holiday photo, this time at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. I took this picture in 1989. So much of the beautiful Disney studio has remained the same over the years, but one difference is that those doors with the Seasons Greetings sign now has the outline of the familiar Buena Vista castle logo which lights up at night.

Muppets game on Disney Fantasy

The Muppets make their debut on Disney Cruise Line in a new adventure game aboard the Disney Fantasy, the new Disney ship setting sail in March 2012.

While sailing on the Disney Dream, I just loved the Enchanted Art around the ship. I'd walk by the pictures and suddenly they'd start moving! A perfect Disney touch! With a unique card, the pictures turned into an Adventure game that could be played around the ship.

The Muppets will be the stars in “The Case of the Stolen Show,” a similar game you can play at sea on the Disney Fantasy.

The adventure begins with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal and a cast of more than 20 Muppets preparing to stage a big performance. But there’s a problem: Kermit’s banjo is missing, Fozzie’s squirting flower has vanished, Gonzo’s crash helmet has gone astray, Animal’s drum sticks have disappeared and the Swedish Chef can’t find his cleaver! All of the props for the big show have been stolen by a cunning thief (or more likely, another Muppet).

Pepe the King Prawn offers to take on detective duties to help Kermit and the rest of the Muppets find their missing props. Kermit, worried about Pepe’s lack of detective skills, turns to the guests for help.

Guided by a map and holding a unique game card in front of select pieces of Enchanted Art, guests unveil clues and find missing props. Elsewhere on the ship, guests may check a Muppets message board and find a Muppet-sized stateroom door to discover clues. Their mission is to identify the culprit and solve the crime before it’s time to raise the curtain and light the lights on the Muppets’ big show.

“The Case of the Stolen Show” is a self-paced adventure game designed for guests ages nine and older. It features several possible endings and multiple randomized events – so each time a guest plays, they have a different gaming experience.

Ghirardelli will be at Disney California Adventure

Ghirardelli will open a new location inside Disney California Adventure park in late spring 2012. The soda fountain and chocolate shop will add yet another layer of traditional San Francisco flair to the Pacific Wharf area of the park.

The new location will feature Ghirardelli’s world-famous hot fudge sundaes and decadent chocolate products. Each guest will be able to enjoy a complimentary sample of the signature Ghirardelli Squares® chocolate. The Disney California Adventure store follows the 13-year success of a similar location at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World.

Ghirardelli joins Disney California Adventure as it completes an expansion that began in 2007. New attractions include the nighttime spectacular “World of Color” and a classic dark ride, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. The project‘s culmination is the 12-acre Cars Land, which opens in summer 2012 along with the newly designed Buena Vista Street entrance to the park, the iconic Carthay Circle Theatre and the Red Car Trolley. The expansion builds upon the transformation of Disneyland Resort into the premier multi-day Southern California vacation destination.

In honor of the 22nd anniversary of "The Little Mermaid" today, I thought I'd post these photos I took at the Walt Disney Studios. Studio events were always fun, but this was particularly exciting because "Mermaid" was such an exciting film, bringing back the great tradition of incredible Disney animation and storytelling with a memorable soundtrack.

For years, the great Elliott Brothers and their band were a staple at Disneyland's Carnation Plaza Gardens. For "Date Nite," which started in 1957 when the park would first remain open until the late hours, Bill and Lloyd Elliott's group were the Date Niters. Starting in 1961, the greatest big bands of all times would also delight guests. One of the joys I get from doing Mouse Clubhouse is from the people who contact me and share new information with me, and this incredible photo was sent to me by Lloyd Elliott's daughter. A promotional photo for a big band festival at Disneyland, every person in this photo is a true legend! Pictured with Walt Disney are Bill, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Les Brown, Stan Kenton & Lloyd. Aqualab on the upcoming Disney Fantasy

At AquaLab on the Disney Fantasy, the upcoming ship of the Disney Cruise Line, you'll be able to frolic among pop jets, geysers and bubblers in this fun and fanciful water play area. Located near the entrance to the AquaDuck water coaster on deck 12, AquaLab features a variety of water "experiments" designed to drench the whole family. By turning wheels and moving levers at three wacky aqua stations guests "control" the speed and temperature of AquaDuck. At a leaky wall, kids cover holes in squirting and spurting pipes with their hands. In another area, water leaks and sprays from the Ducky Dinghy, suspended overhead. Disney Fantasy is scheduled to set sail in March 2012.

Tom Morrow, Mot Worrom and Mr. Johnson

Here's good ol' Mr. Johnson, from Mission to Mars. Before Mr. Johnson was helping people travel to Mars, he was Tom Morrow, also voiced by George Walsh, helping people fly to the moon. Today's Tom Morrow is the robot, voiced by Nathan Lane, that greets you as you enter Disneyland's Innoventions. The character of Tom Morrow had also been heard being paged in "Star Tours." If you listen closely in "Star Tours" today, you'll still hear his name, but now it's backwards! Mot Worrom!

Mission to Mars

Yesterday's photo was taken in Mission to Mars at Disneyland. This posting maybe the first time his face is ever seen by the public. In the attraction you would only see the back of his head. Mr. Johnson (standing up) was voiced by radio announcer George Walsh, who introduced Gunsmoke on the radio for nearly a decade. Walsh’s presence in the parks wasn’t restricted to outer space, however. After retiring from radio, he enjoyed working in the shops of Disneyland’s Main Street.

I'll never forget the day in 1990 that I met Jim Henson, when I was working for Disney. He was on the lot, working on Muppet*Vision 3-D for Walt Disney World at the time, the last movie he ever worked on. To celebrate his birthday today, here's an article from a 1969 Life magazine discusses a new television show called "Sesame Street," and how a puppet creator named Jim Henson created new Muppets for the program. Born in 1936, he would have been 75 years old today.

Miriam Nelson is proof that dancing keeps the heart young. 92 years old today, the legendary Hollywood and Disney choreographer still dances! Miriam was the choreographer for many of Tinseltown's best performers, films and television shows. She worked on movies such as "Lullabye of Broadway" "and "The Jolson Story," as well the "Disney On Parade" traveling show, and the live televised grand opening of Disneyland. I asked Miriam if she worked in live television prior to the theme park's hectic debut and she said, "Yes, I started on Red Skelton, that was my first television show. And Bob Hope was live. All of those shows... Colgate Comedy Hour, all live shows.So I'm used to crazy. This was a little bigger than crazy." Happy birthday, Miriam!

Avast there! X Atencio remembers writing for the "Pirates"

Since today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, I thought I'd post this memory from X Atencio, who put the words into the mouths of the pirates in the Disneyland and Walt Disney World "Pirates of the Caribbean" attractions. X was an animator, and having never done any professional writing, Walt Disney sensed that he would make a great writer, much to X's surprise.

The next thing X knew, he was writing the script for the attractions including "Pirates of the Caribbean." X told me, "The first scene I decided on was the auction scene, and I’d gotten books and I got the 'Treasure Island' film to get the feeling of the jargon, you know, and that was the first scene."

When I asked X what his favorite Disney memory is, he said, "People ask me, 'What do you like best, animation or scripting?' Scripting, because even though I had no background in it, it was my first experience and it was for such a successful show and the fact that I had the mandate from Walt, that’s my fond memory I guess."

Disney villains gather to plot Halloween mischief at “it’s a small world” Mall in Disneyland, while other characters in spooky attire greet guests in Town Square, Main Street, U.S.A.

Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland will honor Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead with traditional skeleton figures on display Sept. 16 through Nov. 2.

Special Halloween treats will be available in Disneyland, including menu items such as Zero’s Ghostly Ghoulash, served in a dog dish in honor of Zero.

"Mary Poppins" behind-the-scenes with choreographers

Taking a break from the rooftops of London, this rare behind-the-scenes moment depicts Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and the children stars of "Mary Poppins," chatting with the film's choreographers Dee Dee Wood and Marc Breaux. This married couple was responsible for all the dance sequences that helped make the film the classic it is today, and the following year continued with Julie Andrews to work on "The Sound of Music" and just a few years later choreographed Dick Van Dyke in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

Amongst their numerous credits, Marc and Dee Dee also were involved in choreographing the fondly remembered traveling Disney show in the '60s, "Disney on Parade."

(So grateful to my friend who has given me many of the photos he acquired while working with people like Marc and Dee Dee during his days at Disney!)

The new "Winnie the Pooh" movie is making its way to Blu-ray and DVD on 10/25/11 and it's got some sweet bonus features!

Disneyland's Main Street ragtime pianist CD

When people think about theme parks, the first thing that pops into mind is often the attractions or the characters, but it's the hard work of the atmosphere entertainment that brings that extra touch! The themed musicians help to transport us to different places and times, from authentic jazz in New Orleans Square to the ragtime pianist that brings some turn-of-the-century style to Main Street.

Robert Glenn has been doing just that on on Main Street since 2006, tickling the ivories in a fashion all his own. It's hard to not marvel at his ragtime melodies, but knowing his background, it's not surprising. He began taking piano lessons at the age of four, and by age seven was already performing in recitals and competitions.

Robert's CD, "MainStreet Music Magic!" brings a bit of Main Street into your home. It includes some Disney favorites such as a "Mary Poppins" medley and tunes from the "Haunted Mansion" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" attractions.

While there's plenty of ragtime and honky tonk, with classics such as "And the Band Played On," "Black and White Rag" and "Waitin' for the Robert E. Lee," there are also softer moments such as "Rainbow Connection," "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Baby Mine."

"MainStreet Music Magic!" is a live performance with an enthusiastic audience, and sometimes "Ragtime Robert" can't help himself but to sing along... and I'll bet you won't be able to resist either!

And by the way, Robert's got another album to spread some holiday cheer! "Christmas on MainStreet" now has a permanent spot in my collection of favorite yuletide albums!

My first day working for Disney

This is the day it all began for me with Disney, March 28, 1988. I was hired as a production assistant in Walt Disney Television Animation and was to work on a series called "Magic Kingdom," in which Disney's classic characters would board a Disney park attraction, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" or "Haunted Mansion," and they would be transported into real-life adventures. While that show never got off the drawing board, so to speak, I ended up working on the second season of "DuckTales."

Also in this photo is TV Animation producer Bob Taylor. One of my favorite memories of Bob is that we both had heard about this "Disney Morgue," which housed all the original artwork from Disney's animated features. Bob and I took a trip over to the Morgue and were greeted by Leroy Anderson, the man who ran it. Leroy was a kind gentleman and I think he enjoyed our enthusiasm. He pulled out entire sequences of pencil drawing animation from classic films, and even original backgrounds from "Lady and the Tramp." I remember Bob pointing out to me how they were all designed from the perspective of a dog, low to the ground.

Also in our orientation group was Tom Schumacher who went on to head up Disney Feature Animation and later Disney Theatrical Productions.

For me, this day began a life's journey that I am so happy to be on.
